Your Copywriting Diet – how to sleep well, eat well, oh and… write well
Another bad dream.
How come my dreams take place in the dark?
Yes, I know it’s dark in the real world when I sleep, but I mean it’s dark in my dreams too – how about you?
Have you ever studied the themes running through your dreams? That’s when I noticed.
Yes, every dream that I can remember there’s no daylight. None whatsoever.
Maybe someone can let me know what that’s all about, please?
But dreams aside, the thing is it’s vitally important to get enough shut-eye as a copywriter. (Well, to be honest even if you’re not.)
But to produce solid, infectious, enthusiastic and persuasive copy you’ve got to have a creative brain.
And a creative brain needs to be a well-nourished and well-rested brain. A relaxed brain.
Not all the time mind - you do need tons of exciting, stimulating input too, but when it comes to STARTING your copy, you do need to relax (I reckon, anyway).
Next time you get stuck in starting whatever you’re stuck starting, try relaxing.
Take 3 deep breaths, lower your shoulders, straighten your back and try to relax your eye sockets. Let your tongue fall down from the roof of your mouth. (Aha …see? didn’t even know it was glued up there, did you?)
That will relax your jaw muscles too.
Next, take a look at your surroundings.
Because where you’re writing too is critical.
No good being some place with distractions.
Right now it’s raining heavily again and at the front of my house, where my office is, boy it can be noisy. I find it deafening if you’re anywhere near other human beings when it rains, don’t you?
They get agitated.
And when they’re agitated they drive agitatedly making their car tyres swoosh and their horns blast in a very agitated way.
They scream at their children to be heard over the din.
Everything’s rush rush rush and I get distracted.
Speaking of getting distracted…
Have you ever sat in a comfortable, warm room in winter…no draughts… ideally with an open fire?
With either a cat on your lap, or a dog’s chin resting gently (with a budgie on your shoulder and gerbil up your sleeve… little joke.)
And listened.
Simply sat and listened to the rain outside.
Try it.
Highly recommended.
(Even at the risk of sounding like an old witch.)
But where was I?
A relaxed brain.
Yes, and a well-nourished one too. Although slight hunger I find keeps you alert and productive.
Forget chocolate, forget toast, forget cakes and biscuits – they’ll send you snoring in no time.
Fruit, yes fruit and water is what you need (and you get to feel smug too!)
Then, with your copy finally done and dusted and put away for later editing you can get up, get out, get out and about and join in with the rest of the world’s frenzy.
On second thoughts…. "Here boy!…walkies!"
