visited by curly haired Scotsman driving a Beetle engined
(modified 1600 of course) flying saucer I personally named
OBEE1.

So ...
why should you create marketing that is out of this world?
Look let's
be honest here. People are sick-to-death of being hammered
with advertising. But on the other hand ... people love being
sold to. Contradiction right? Wrong, let me explain with the
following example.
When does a
car stop being a car? When it becomes a Beetle. You see the
Volkswagen came from Germany. It's name means "peoples car"
That's exactly what it was, a car for the nation at a price
they could afford plus it was designed to live as long as the
owner!
One war and
some years later sales were good. But how do you then sell a
Nazi made brand (Volkswagen) to American's?
How Your Advertising Can
Become Out of This World
In 1959
Volkswagen commissioned the amazing Bill Bernbach agency
Doyle Dayne Bernbach to create some killer advertising that
would hopefully break the American market.
They first
re-name this ugly duckling from Volkswagen to the 'Beetle'
(why Beetle? Look at the shape dumbo ;-))
Then they
took a selection of simple photos of the car, created some
very simple headlines. Some very short copy.
Then came
the launch of ... the " BEETLE"
This Is Not A CAR. Its A
Personality That Will Become Part Of Your Life!
Were
those adverts any good
?(the above is just
one of a series)
They took
this ugly little German car to the BEST SELLING IMPORTED car
in the USA at that time from a standing start!
HOW? Dead
simple, they used an advertising strategy that was out of this
world, no question! They stopped trying to sell a car and
began selling the Beetle!
How Does That Apply To You And
Your Business?
Ah, the big
question how does the above apply to you and whatever it is
your selling or doing?
What did
Volkswagen do? They took something that was mass produced and
turned it into something totally unique, the Beetle.
Now you
might not have something as unique I agree but you can still
look do this.

How is your
product positioned? High-end, low-end, middle-ground, premium,
rare, mass-produced, fad, fashion, timeless etc. How do you
find out how to position yourself?
Learn from
the example of the Beetle above. Did they sell a Car? No.
Re-read above if you have to.
Let's say
...
... You
sell a service. Say you are a Hair Salon. How on earth do you
position "hairdressing" as different? Isn't a haircut --- just
a haircut? YES but it doesn't have to be.
Listen to
this for a cool idea at one Hair Salon. You cannot go into the
salon and just ask for an appointment. You phone first. They
offer you a consultation appointment first of all but you have
to wait at least one month for that.
You then
have to go and let the stylist interview you first. He/she
asks all the right things about you and your hair. In fact
he/she has a long series of questions on a sheet that you both
have to go through.
Then and
only then will the stylist let you know BY MAIL if you can
have an appointment with them. You then have to wait 3 months.
When you go the cost is $400.00.
Now would
they have clients rushing to fill the place? You bet they
would. Why? The positioning is amazing. Why? Well, you have to
imaging what would be going on in the potential new client
head.
The build
up. The anticipation. The excitement. The fear. Every emotion
you can think of, they will go through it. Not only that ...
people pay for that kind of KILLER SERVICE! Why? And this is
even cooler ...
... you
will only attract the kind of clients that have the cash to
pay for your service. No time-wasters or tire-kickers!
