Does Testing For Results Really Need To Be This Complex?

I am not a big fan of testing.

Well not in the *loose* sense it gets thrown about online. I mean how ridiculous does this sound ... "add a *print page* link WILL increase your sales". C'mon that is pathetic as a blanket statement that would never increase the sales of garbage products!

Tests have to be market related, no question otherwise most should be ignored!

Okay, let me explain this test I did just last week. It is very target related.

My main testing ground is one of my other websites at www.Hairee.com

The kind of stuff I test is email, web page formatting, autoresponders, copy, broadcasting and anything else to increase my sales online.

So last week I took a good look at my list of 5k there and decided on this broadcast test.

My Broadcast Test!  

The list is around 5,000 mainly hairdressing salon owners looking for salon management tips and advice. 

I broadcast to that list about once/twice max a month. No real response to the messages but sales are steady.

Ask most marketers and they will say broadcasting should be NO MORE than once a week. I wanted to see if it would make a difference if I emailed my list 4 times in one week.

Purpose of my test.

  • How many would unsubscribe?

  • How many would buy from the page?

  • How much of a percentage increase or decrease would it make to web sales?

This format goes out monthly and rarely gets any kind of instant response.

Now I began the broadcast last week on Sunday. I sent out 4 broadcast emails with the same format above. That's FOUR IN ONE WEEK!

Now for any hardened marketer you'll know that is a lot in one week. Anyway I have always thought this.

"if someone genuinely interested in what I am saying subscribes to my list they'll want as much info as possible as long as it helps them" ... Right?

Also I was on a bus with Armand Morin down in London in May. We talked about this very subject. He revealed to me that he has at times sent out twice to his list in one day with no bad effect.

So here are my test results.

  • Unsubscribed from my list: 14 (5,000 on the list)
  • How many ordered right away from the ezine? 2.5 average daily
  • Weekly percentage increase in sales 225% increase in sales

Lesson is this

  • Simple single messages: All messages were one single thought.
  • One Sales Sig: Just one simple sales sig at the end of each email.
  • Easy To Read Copy: Copy is in a style that matches the target.

All three ingredients together increased sales by 225% in 7 days.

The only sales message was a sig at the end of the page. Here is the actual sig...
