photo above? It actually brings tears to my eyes.
You
won't know why. You probably won't understand why. Can I
explain to you? It'll help your business. Okay listen
close...
The
picture is from where I was born. In fact on the 2nd floor
behind the big pillar on the left is the council flat
where I was born. The address is ... B59 Fort Place,
Leigh, Edinburgh.
The old
walls are original. They are from an old fort that was
demolished in the 60's to make way for the modern blocks
you now see.
The Old
Fort was designed to protect the harbour of Leith from
invasion.
Let me
tell you a bit more.
That's
the harbour above called Newhaven where we would go get
our dinner right out of the water. The Fort at the top of
the page faces the old harbour. At the side of the harbour
are Leith Docks. My dad worked there off and on as a
shipbuilder. Actually my granddad worked there also in the
corn mills.
But
mostly, we lived in poverty. It was a hand to mouth life
for mum and dad. The work would come and go. When it went
we all had to walk over to the harbour and either catch
fish for dinner or giant crab or lobster. There came a
point in their life when they said...
"...I
Have Had Enough ..."
and
things had to change fast. Mum and Dad had two options.
OPTION
ONE: live poor, die poor.
OPTION
TWO: escape from poverty by taking action!
They
took massive action. That massive action took them from
the confines of poverty in Leith and put them into a real
house, real job, real life!
