During any uncertain times those that survive are those that get smart and take action. Those that stand and just observe sink.

Every now and then you have to take a real good look at what is delivering and what isn’t. So many times over the years I have seen business literally throw money at marketing and just hope it works.

These are economic uncertain times that are not only giving us a fear of what could be to come but also mesmerizing us and baffling us with new channels of communications.

Mobile marketing, should I use SnapChat, is Facebook my best option, we like LinkedIn but we’ve never had a buyer from LinkedIn and no so many online channels of marketing than ever before.

And more than ever before the first option for most business advisors is to advise the online option usually the Social Media route despite the fact that most almost 40% of marketers admit to having no idea if it works, around 40% say they have a feeling it might work with no supporting facts and around 18% can show a real factual number to support their social media marketing.

Clearly if the entire marketing budget goes into social media it’s a huge risk – an 80% risk of failure in fact!

Just a note on social media I have said many times before. Clicks, likes and shares do not usually equate at any level to sales. Will click likes and shares pay your bills?

So clearly during these uncertain times marketing strategies that are going to be

  1. Clearly thought out and planned
  2. Built around tested strategies
  3. Highly targeted
  4. Mind set focused
  5. More engaged
  6. Socially giving
  7. Risk reduced
  8. And the magical ability to do more with less

What’s current may not be current for your buyers. What does this mean? It means that just because everyone is doing it that you should do it. This is the huge mistake that marketers make and advise.

Economic uncertainty means you’re going to have to pull things in a little more and give your strategies more thought.

  • Where are your buyers hanging out?
  • What are they reading?
  • What are their habits?
  • How to you get in front of them?
  • How do you tap into their mindset?
  • How can you use their thoughts to increase your response?

This isn’t rocket science it just takes some thought and if your guys aren’t delivering you need to get those thoughts into your business so you can face these uncertain times head on and win. It is no accident that whilst everyone is distracted during a recession by the negative noise there is those that thrive and make a killing during that period. They get new thoughts and work in harmony with those thoughts.

If your team is not giving you anything different you might be one of those that fail to realise your goals because to survive these periods drastic dramatic and sometimes just fine tweaks are needed.

GET CAREFUL

Careful planning should be created and built around testing strategies and tactics. In other works don’t get everyone doing everything on a strategy that has not been tested. That is success suicide. Testing these days is easy and never been easier. All marketing should go through a 12-week multi-variable testing period before a decision is made to run with it or not.

REAL TARGETING

When targeting your customers you cannot hope and pray they see your messages – that is a stupid approach to a system that can be tested. Your customers hang out somewhere, they read certain things, they go to the same places daily. Despite the fact that you are told the public might get 20,000 messages pass by their eyes everyday scientific tests have shown the brain also has the ability to filer certain noise. In fact your buyers will actually acknowledge just 400 messages yet their brain is so in tune they will still see any message that is in harmony with their mindset.

MINDSET

So in other words you must use mindset marketing. Again this will take a short period of time but the rewards can be huge and push you through uncertain economies.

ENGAGEMENT

Engagement is a word that is so thrown around these days. I want to be blunt here – having a social media account that simply posts endless links isn’t engaging in the slightest. Think about yourself for a moment here – what engages you and why does it engage you? Answer that and you’ll have a greater ability to deliver more engagement for your customers. Again – likes and shares does not equate to pounds in the bank so think this out very carefully.

WHAT'S YOUR SOCIAL PURPOSE?

Social purpose is also a new modern term that has gained ground over the past few years. People are now more inclined in certain businesses to support a socially engaging service or product first. Are you giving back? Do you have a bigger purpose in your business to give back to the community? Do you know if you are? If not you need to find out and install some purpose into your business because the facts are showing that this could be what your buyers want? This generation wants purpose and need that purpose to be filled. Are you giving them what they want?

LOW RISK MARKETING

Reducing risk in your response is easy once you have tested everything and masterfully masterminded what is needed to do that. If you are not getting that from your team you should consider it a priority to bring in extra minds for added input and advice.

MORE RESULTS LESS SPEND

Doing more for less is easier than you think. I have a client that was spending £5,000 each month on his marketing. Not a lot to some but a lot to him. For £5000 he was getting no response. I reduce his mailings by 4,900 and reduce his spend. His response went from zero to 47% due to the campaign now being highly targeted, mindset focused and part of a bigger system.

Reducing marketing spend is easy. For example during uncertain times you might have a marketing team that is bloated. That doesn’t have to be 12 in your team it could be three in your team that don’t deliver. You know what to do.

As far as marketing spend and budget goes this is a perfect time for you to get more for less. That means you must get smarter. Just recently I sent over 3000 buyers through a small market using one single tool and barely no investment. It wasn’t what you could call beautiful marketing it was raw, simple, stripped back and to the point using just twitter in a very smart way.

CREATING YOUR CERTAINTY

These are uncertain times yet they are also times when you can create more certainty in your marketing budget and results. To ge more for less this is a time when you need good advice and if that good advice isn’t in your office you must go outside and pull in the right minds to work alongside you.

Here is what we do know. There are companies that have been in business since 1889 – Marks and Spencer. That company has seen everything and thrived and survived and grown and changed. They are here right now due to finding smart advice, willingness and ability to change according to the market changes.

How To Choose The Best Business Mentor For You

How the hell do you choose a proven reliable mentor in a world where so many now claim to be experts?

Type the word MENTOR into Google and see what it brings up? On my Google right now it returns over 162,000,000 (that’s million) returns. I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t have time to sit and go through them until I find the right person.

The other problem searching like this is who is actually telling the truth? The past 10-years or so we have been swept up in an information age where information is no longer from the source but rather 3rd 4th or even 10th hand! Would you rather have genuine Nike shoes or cheap copies? I know you’ll understand exactly what I mean.

Now the truth - So much talk about fake news these days yet it does have a validity and does affect your choice of mentor. The big problem online is the ability to copy, the ability to look like a million dollars cheaply and the unaccountability of what is written on web pages. In other words, anyone can say almost anything they like and look, as they like with ZERO experience of their subject.

That’s dangerous and I will tell you why. In my past 32-years in business and over the past couple of decades since the advent of the web I have seen more than one or two businesses going bust due to bad advice and frankly outrageous mentoring and business mentors. And when I say out of business I mean as far as losing homes and wives! All because the mentor made claims that simply weren’t true.

And I want to share this with you. I have discovered and learn more from actual EXPERIENCE in doing business day to day than I have from reading any book and speaking to anyone. The only downside of doing it this way is it is a much longer route to success.

The big problem with a business mentor is this…

  • Anyone can set up a website and say they are a MENTOR.
  • Anyone can log onto huge mentor websites and register himself or herself as a MENTOR.
  • Anyone can stand on a stage and proclaim they are an expert MENTOR.

And as someone that has worked very full-on in the world of writing powerful and hugely successful copy for clients even this world is now heavily tainted with new copywriters that put more focus on creating a course before they focus on winning highly paying clients and serving those clients well.

So as you can see, working with mentors that fit isn’t easy and has never been as hard as it is these days.

There’s nothing new about mentoring.

It’s interesting how the world has changed. I think it's an accurate guess to say most people wouldn’t dream of having a mentor yet mentoring is as old as man himself.

In ancient times once a young man (or woman) was coming into their adult life. They were never sent out with a trial and error approach to things. No, they were had been mentored either by village elders or family member or parents.

Recently I watched an isolated tribe in Peru. The old guy talked about his son going away at 15-years old. The interviewer asked the tribesman this question and it was this.

“What if he doesn’t come back?”

The elder replied, “He isn’t a man”

In other words, the tribe mentored their young from a very small age right up into the age of 15-years old and then they would be sent away with no clothes and just a spear to come back as a man – if he survived! (This was from a documentary in 2017).

You can see how important it was for the tribe to teach the young men how to grow and develop. Clearly, they wanted their boys to return as men and wanted no harm to come to them. They were shown all the important things that will help them to be strong, safer and happier faster so they could return.

They didn’t teach from a manual. They didn’t teach from 2nd 3rd or 8th hand. They taught from something that is priceless when it works and in this case life and death – they taught, shared and mentored from real life experience!

That is how seriously the mentoring was taken.

Even I had some mentors. At the age of fifteen years, I wanted to start my own punk band. I copied the Sex Pistols and the Clash. I did what they did and formed my own band with relative success in the North West of England. Unfortunately, I never had the same success.

In my first job as a landscape gardener, I was put with a man named Norman. He told me to stick close by and do what he did or do what I was told. The reason was obvious – so I could learn fast from someone with 27-years real-life experience. As a young man in the workplace not only did he share a lot of the job he shared a lot of high value with me about life itself and I appreciated him.

Then as a trainee hairdresser, I quickly found out that most hairdressers simply weren’t good enough for what I wanted to do. Everything was the same and I wanted to do things different. So I did a pre-web search and eventually found and bought everything and anything I could about Vidal Sassoon and a very young hairdresser named Anthony Mascolo (Toni & guy). I devoured and listened to what they had written in their books. This type of mentoring fast-tracked me into my hairdressing career.

I finally became a hair and beauty salon owner with three very busy salons. I had to create marketing and advertising for them. It was very average and very much the same as what everyone was doing. The results did show. Again I looked to be guided by someone with experience. I discovered a guy named Leslie Spears. He had created a salon owners organisation named 365 Hair. What I learned from them literally quadrupled my salon business over the following years.

Although I was creating marketing and advertising for my own businesses I accidently discovered I could actually get paid to write words. A client asked me to write some letters for his accounting business. I copied a series of reminder and thank you letters I used for my salons. All were single sheet A4 letters. In total the time took me just one hour or so to create for him. When he came to pick up the letters we never agreed a fee of any sort. He was happy and simply handed me an envelope. In the envelope he handed me was £1,500. I had been hairdressing almost 20-years so this felt like a good way to move into something new but I knew zero about.

My business mentor for the advertising business

I decided I needed to learn from the best to fast track me. I had been a fan of Jay Conrad Levinson, Jay Abraham and Michel Le Bouef but really I wasn’t a big reader and I needed someone that could also teach me the business of doing this new business.

I eventually discovered the master and godfather of modern advertising, David Ogilvy in books. The initial books I bought that I paid just £5-10 for on eBay were to make me literally hundreds of thousands in payments and then the effect on my client's sales went into sales that created literally million upon millions in sales. All from my £5-10 mentoring book from David Ogilvy.

Today I have shelves of books by Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky. I read and get hold of anything I can buy them because I aim to be a great author and for me to do that I can only do that learning from the very best.

“Better a dead genius than a living fool” I believe this to be true.

So whomever I mentor with I have a very firm vision for my personal outcomes. I know exactly what I want to achieve and I know exactly how I need to achieve it before I get hold of my mentor be they dead or alive. I always try and go all the way back to the reliable source rather than a copy.

As you can see from a very personal perspective mentoring is hugely useful and the very best way to progress forward fast and safe in your business.

So the real question is how do you choose a business mentor for yourself?

It’s easier than you think but only if you know what you need. Notice I said need… NOT WANT. What you want and what you need are two very different things. So work out exactly what you need and then the mentor usually appears somehow but you should be willing to do some research and digging to find the right mentor for you.

So let's make this really easy for you.

  1. What to you need?
  2. Why do you need it?
  3. What is the perfect outcome for you?
  4. Do you need a specialist?
  5. How will you measure the outcome?
  6. What is a fair exchange price
  7. Is the fee relative to the return on your investment
  8. Can you see any risk?
  9. Are you doing this for the right reasons?

WARNING: Over all my years rarely have I seen mentoring work for any ‘get rich quick’ scheme. The only person I have seen getting rich are those that sell this garbage.

Very recently I was asked but a guy that had bought into a scheme. Up until that point, he had spent over £12,000 in savings to be part of the scheme. This scheme is very well known and the guy that runs the scheme is very rich (on the surface).

I was paid a handsome fee to look through everything he had paid for simply to offer an opinion. He wanted to know is it good or bad in my opinion.

After a careful and honest review on the videos, online educational etc I found out that quite a bit of the materials had been banned from Google and YouTube yet they were still instructing the buyers to do just this to get riches fast!

After I went through everything I wrote the conclusion to my clients and told him to stop everything right now and ask for a full 100% refund. He finally got his refund but only after threatening legal action.

The client admitted he had done this for one reason only – to get rich quick. Now there is nothing wrong with riches but again in my experience doing anything for money only rarely works.

£12,000 wasn’t his real loss (although he got it back). His real loss was the hour after hour, day after day, month after month and well over a year he had spent trying to make this proven to fail yet sold as a promise system work. Time sint money – time is life and what a waste of life when you take the wrong route by deception mentoring.

Another example: a couple of years ago I wanted to know one tiny trick that would increase my average income but in a very specialized area. I searched for who was doing what I wanted to do. Once I found the specialist I then searched him out to see if I could buy that fast-track secret from him. I contacted him through his website and he agreed to share the secrets with me for - $5,000 – for one hour. Would you have paid that for a chat? How would you feel paying that only to discover you are already doing the secret yourself but it just needed a slight tweak to perfect it? Would you feel cheated?

I paid because I knew the return would be more than what I paid. That one bit of information that took around five minutes maximum to share with me but it was priceless and made me tens of thousands from the simple changes I made. Not only had I paid $5,000 for it but also the returns have been immeasurable in financial terms.

So at this stage ask some questions about your choice of business mentor

  • Will a mentor help you to get from where you are right now to where you really need to be?
  • Will a mentor give you the skills and information required to make this change?
  • Will a mentor have the ability based on experience to help you through and make needed changes when needed?
  • Your R.O.I.: It was worth every penny (does the investment although feel large actually become small in relation to your investment?).
  • Your Needs: So know what you need (is it something you simply can’t work out yourself or don’t have the time to and want to know in a second how to do it).
  • Why: Know why you need it (what is the reason you need this information and you should be specific?).
  • Your Outcome: Think about the perfect outcome for yourself (will this mentor be able to help you get an outcome that you can see clearly and perfect in your mind's eye?).
  • Life and Time: Think about how you measure your result (money isn’t the perfect measure of anything but a good nights sleep and a smile is so think about how to measure it. I usually invest in a mentor for a financial return so that’s how I measure in the case of my business).

How do you know if a mentor is a good fit for you?

The next thing you need to think about is a mentor that actually suits you. Some mentors will drive you crazy and some mentors will be just perfect for you and others of course, will simply be an absolute waste of your time. Try to get to know as much about them as you possibly can and see if it is a match for you. Read everything you can online that is available. Don’t forget whoever you look at there are always bad reviews as well as the good so take a balanced approach to this.

One thing I would always do is request to them for a free 20-30 minute chat before you commit. The other thing you should do is request to them for testimonials or to speak to previous customers of your new mentor. Don’t be nervous about doing this, mentors are used to it but they are all different. Try and get a feel for them over the phone or Skype.

  • Do you like them as people?
  • Do you like how they sound – genuine tone?
  • Can they give you answers to your questions or do they work around the answers?
  • Do they have a good history of doing rather than teaching business or the skills you need?
  • Are they respected those that know them?
  • Can you risk your investment into them?

For example: With my business mentor I don’t offer a money-back-guarantee I only offer 32-years of front-line and MENTOR experience.

Yet some will offer a guarantee that can sound a bit like this –

‘It’s never been so easy - make £50,000 in the first year or your money back’.

Who would you trust? What sounds most realistic?

I like my mentor clients to come to my home, eat out in high places and share details and information that is working and has worked p everything.

Yet most other mentors would never dream of letting you into their home. I give all my students my personal cellphone whilst other mentors will only give an office phone in office hours.

This might work for you but you must decide what you want from a business mentor?

So in other words, you really need to know what will fit your needs for the very best. What I offer might be the worst thing for you and vice-versa. Just try and find the right fit so it feels good and works well.

One note for you here is this; if it feels like it isn’t working just move on quickly and find the right person. Time is something you cannot recover so make sure you use your time wisely and again measure the results you need.

Paying a mentor – how do you work out if its value?

I believe in value exchange.

Simply this means that if you paid $5000 for a mentor what would you feel would be a good exchange in return for that $5000?

I would sit down and work out my returns.

In other words …

  • What do I want from this investment?
  • Would I get my investment back?
  • How long would it take to get it back?
  • How much more than my investment would I get back?
  • If I invest $5000 what is my projected return that I would actually be happy with?

For some, they will invest into a mentor for a lifetime of skills wrapped up into a fast track teaching method. For others, they want a return over five years. For others again they simply want to make lifestyle changes and need new skills to help them push through faster.

So I would sit with a pad and pen and work it out. My estimate would be to get at least four times my investment back over time but I would make sure I knew that I would get my investment back right away. When I say right away I would always work out how to do that and make that really happen that I get my investment back relatively quickly.

So you need to do the math here. A mentor should never be a risk. The risk is only when you fail to do your math and homework.

  • Work out your numbers
  • Be realistic on your outcome
  • Make sure it’s a reasonable investment not just a lump of cash spent

For example, I worked with a client that was spending literally £25,000 a month on direct mail. In real a terms for what his company was doing that isn’t a lot of cash yet it’s a huge amount of cash if the returns were zero and they were zero.

They paid me to mentor or fast track them through the process and look at what they were doing wrong. They spent a good amount on their mentoring but the question is it a good investment for them?

One the first day we met I slashed their direct mail bill by around 24,500 mailers. So right away they got their investment back from business mentor. The first campaign I took them through which included copy, design, and packaging for the mailer sold a record £1.2 million in cars from just a few hundred mailers rather than the 25,000 they had been sending before.

Was it worth their investment?

Another young guy from Australia decided to mentor with me. Not only did he fly from Sydney to train with me he borrowed $25,000 from his mother to make it happen. Something incredible happened in that not only did he take orders for over $90,000 in under 12-weeks but today over 12 years later he is still making a good living and great life with his initial investment.

When thinking about your new mentor simply ask yourself will it be worth your investment of cash and of course your valuable time. Bear in mind you may not get back your investment in days – it might be years – but that might be natural. Just think about what is best for you and then the return for you.

Some things I would be very careful of from a mentor

  • Big promises that are hard to believe
  • Results that sound ridiculous
  • Actual numbers and results you will get
  • Instant results for minimum effort
  • Cheap mentors (you pay for what you get)
  • Mentors with no business experience (I would never allow a surgeon to operate if I was his first would you?)
  • A mentor that gives you the hard sell. (To them you are simply a number)

For example some years ago when I was speaking at more business events it was an absolute priority for the promoter that you had to sell as many places into your mentoring as possible. If you failed to do so you would never be asked to speak again. That’s not good for a speaker that loves to speak.

It was almost comical to listen to some speakers in the back room planning away from the audiences, trying making up and practicing every line and every phrase to be supported by NLP and other doubtful practices just to get a sale. They would never refuse a customer – money was always the number one driving force.

In other words, sign up and see what happens. As a side note be careful of signing up for any mentor package from a stage. It is all too easy to get wrapped up in the powerful pitch, the strong slides, and amazing speakers and of course the emotions of the crowd. Tread very careful.

If a mentor doesn’t interview you before anything starts I doubt they will be right for you. I interview ALL my applicants before we work together and have no problem saying no to some applicants for reasons such as they may not be right for me and I might not be right for them

How to choose your mentor

So in a nutshell, the business mentor has to be in line with what you already have in mind. If you need to sell cars or want to be a hairdresser well there is no point getting mentored by someone that has zero experience in either. Be wise in your choice.

You cannot buy experience. How can you pay for what anyone can learn over twenty or thirty years? Does the mentor you work with have genuine experience in business, on the front lines of business or are they simply pitching a manual or a course to you?

Mentoring in business isn’t simply about a system or a way of doing things. It can be about understanding people, understanding the buyer's process, understanding triggers and other important parts of making progress forward.

It can also be that you need a mentor to help you with small daily decisions, large monthly decisions because they have been there they understand the processes and can reduce your risk dramatically.

For me, it is always interesting to see say a marketing director of a company with NO business experience being given the reigns to the marketing or – THE FUTURE – of a company. That is what you call very high-risk strategy.

A mentor for whatever reason you need a mentor should reduce risk, increase the speed of your goals, help to navigate you through the process much faster and have the ability to pass over skills for life that can be used tome and time again.

I have to finish say in my 32-years in business, in my two decades of mentoring and in my multi-million-pound sales experience I have rarely seen mentors with no real life experience deliver real life experience.

Further on this page I am going to show you how to replace your income, transition into a life that gives back to you rather than take from you and how to create as many income streams as you like.

First, let me explain a little of why you should listen to me.

I am writing to you from the village I live in. The village is Hale in Cheshire, listed as one of the richest areas in the UK. I live a good life my wife; we have more than everything we need and live in a large penthouse apartment where our neighbors are the rich and famous seen on TV or in the Premier league (football). Today as I write they are filming a new movie in the street as a follow-up to the movie Snatch.

We have homes abroad in The Republic of Georgia and travel to them regular as well as rent them out on Airbnb. We also have a couple niche businesses one of which is in the salon industry that is one of the biggest in its field (www.salonpunk.com) that has a steady income on autopilot. Life is good life is very good. Our car is paid for cash although we don’t drive a lot. We eat out every single day and drink a lot of coffee.

Now I am not telling you this to show-off I am telling you because that is exactly how it is.

It wasn’t always like that – My background I think you will relate to.

Building a Business - Building a Life

I have been self-employed since 1985. I hated taking orders so I constantly got fired. It was the very best thing that ever happened to me.

I tried a few things and opened three brick and mortar shops in Cheshire, England. They all went really well despite the startup hiccups.

In 1996 I started to hear about the Internet and doing business online. I was interested and I thought about it as a possible marketing tool for my business. I did thousands of direct mail in those days so this seemed like a good option to send email. The problem I had was no one had an email address then so it was slow. So that same year I built my first website using Microsoft Front Page with a tech guy I knew called Andrew who had a lot of teeth missing!

By 1997 I had a crazy and slightly obsessive idea that I could create a new life from the web selling stuff or services or something. I wasn’t sure but I thought I could use it somehow maybe to even mail salon products. The problem I had then was mailing them cost more than the actual bottle of hair product.

The first thing I sold was a Nintendo computer game and then another and another. Now that wasn’t going to change my life because I was making really good money from my three hairdressing salons. However it taught me that I could actually sell things online and maybe create a business from it. I actually wanted out of the salon business due to a very painful disc and back problem so this felt like good idea.

Around 1998 I got a new home computer with an early version of Windows. It seemed easy to use but dial-up was painful and the thought of video, audio or even images online was incredibly slow if possible at all.

I had this idea. So I set up a new website a new venture and a new business around my new idea. It was a website aimed at the salon industry that I still have named www.SalonPunk.com.

Another Transition

I felt after 17 years owning a salon and solving all the salon problems that were thrown at me I could become a salon consultant.  Now it took me around 18-months to sell the very first thing from that website but I had to learn everything myself so it was slow. I was building a house and had four young kids at the time and of course my three salons. Every minute of everyday was busy.

By 2002 I was seen as a real expert in the salon industry because of my salon business website. I was also selling between 10-15 ebooks everyday at around $197 each. I was also offered a column in a national magazine which I accepted and wrote in for over two years and also flown over to the USSR to share my expertise to over 1000 hair and beauty salon business owners. I was also invited to Japan and many other places whilst being chased by the mighty Wella for a project and other large corporations. In 2006 I travelled over to Australia to speak and train around 500 salon owners.

Anyway ... My Personal ‘TRANSITION’

My own transition was now complete. I had traveled the world on several occasions, been invited to wine and dine with the rich and famous on many occasions and had acclaim and recognition.

I work very loose and freely. I have a state-of-the-art Apple Mac these days. I have a MacbookPro I use only for video. I have an iPad I use off and on but I have my number one business tool with me at all times. This is my iPhone which I update every two years. Today I run with an iPhone 6 plus because I like the big screen.

People never believe me when I tell them but I have written some of my most successful sales materials, books and other stuff using just my thumb on my iPhone. It just works for me.

I don’t have an office although I am now taking on a workspace of around 1000 sq. ft. to get me out of my apartment now and then.  I also travel a lot as we have a home in Tbilisi Georgia. I don’t even have an office there I simply go a cafe and spend an hour or two or three on my iPhone.

I need flexible and I like flexible. Transition gives me just that.

Recently my desktop Mac crashed. I had to have some major parts replaced. To me it always feels like an office has burnt down and everything is lost. The reality is different as I host every single thing I do online in two separate cloud accounts so nothing can ever be lost again.

I suppose you could say I run a Nomadic business that pays me very well and gives me the life I live. I am one of the few true one hundred percent online people that I know.

There has never been a more important – yet easier time – to take back control of your life.

There's nothing new in fake despite it being all over the media right now as something new. It isn't.

Fake even affects marketing solutions or what you should or could use to create more results.

Fake news arrived in the world of marketing on mass with the advent of the web.

Here's what happened and how it can adversely affect results in your business.

When I arrived online in the late 90s people like myself were usually early adopter of the web for their business. It was a problem in those days because not everyone had email!

It's was just another way to expand our reach or to expand my own marketing outlets to gain more business after all business is about being successful not struggling.

The New "FAKE' Expert.

During the mid-2000s in particular saw the rise the 'new expert'. These were groups of people that went doing business but started the business of selling advice to those that had no idea how to use the web to expand their business.

That seemed fair after all we all have to learn. But ot long after then rose the fake news reporters and advisors in an area of the marketing world that would and still will do anything for a sale.

They would and will tell you anything to get a sale for themselves to your detriment.

Yes this will work, yes that will work and most would listen to them especially if you are in businesses and don't have time to learn yet another skill.

And the fake principles are like this.

Make some promises but not set in stone.

Confuse them with science as science sounds impossible.

Create complex thoughts and ideas that they will be happy to leave an expert to.

Build proof and patterns for jumping on board with the next new or big thing in marketing.

And you know the story!

32 Years Later

In my 32-years experience. In my twenty plus years working with clients like yourself. In my experience generating sales going into the millions for my clients. The Mind Not The Latest

Marketing is mind based. The mind has to trust before it reacts. Trust is built over time. Time can take months not minutes or hours.

Once trust is built then and only then can a conversation take place.

Yet the fake new in marketing will tell you that do everything, anything and all things new.

Why do people buy?

“We get enquiries but we cannot convert them?”

Here is what I see and hear with clients all the time.

This will help you and will explain why most enquiries do not convert.

More important

How do you get them to convert?

You know what this year, the year of TRUMPLAND and BREXIT has created more issues you should address.

The biggest issue being that of FEAR and how does that ‘mass hysteria’ fear or the thoughts that go into the minds of the majority affect your sales – because it will.

So let me share a few things with you worth knowing.

First your customer has decided to buy what you sell a long time before they get to you. Think about it – you’ve done it yourself.

You see something, decide it's cool or perfect for what you want. This might be ages and ages before you go and buy. For example I decide to buy an IPad Pro the full size and full spec one. I made that decision maybe 6-months ago.

Have I bought it yet? No and that is because I will buy before we go over to our other home in the Republic of Georgia. Maybe a day or two be fore we leave I will go out and grab one.

Yet I have bought it in my mind already. I will buy from the person that gives me a good enough reason to buy from them.

But the point is this: I have already bought it in my mind.

Lets say for example you sell a program to retrain people leaving the Armed forces.

The person leaving the forces knows well in advance – maybe even a year before he or she is leaving. They start to plan their exit strategy for a new life.

They search for training courses or something that will help them. Now after search they know exactly what they want. They have bought it already in their mind.

There is nothing to say when they will order but they have bought.

My son is taking driving lessons right now. He is planning his first car. Everyday he sends me photos of vintage VW beetles. He is building up a mental picture of himself driving the car – even the colour of the car.

It might be a year before he buys.

In other words you do not have to persuade the buyer to buy as the buyer has already bought. What you really have to do is convince the buyer you are the right person to buy from and that means this …

DO NOT TRY TO SELL THEM ANYTHING.

If you do this will turn them off from buying.

Why?

Because they have already bought in their mind and they don’t want you to try and convince them otherwise.

What do they want from you?

How to increase conversions from enquiries.

The buyer needs to be convinced of your expertise, your authentic approach, your position as an expert in your service or products. They also want to know you will support them before the purchase, during the purchase and at anytime after the purchase.

The following two things have never been so important for buyers in 2017.

  • Certainty.
  • Distinction.

In an uncertain climate that we are right now people ask internal questions.

How will BREXIT affect me?

How will TRUMPLAND affect me?

This affects the mind.

This affects the buyer.

How certain are doing a transaction with your company?

Can you offer a level of certainty from during this uncertain time? You’ll be surprised how small this has to be?

How distinct are you?

How distinct are your services, products, staff or even delivery? Are you so distinct you are the one and only option when your buyer is ready to hand over cash for what they bought mentally months before?

I am a so distinct I will be the very first and only option?

So back to the enquiry to sales process.

It goes like this.

The buyer has a thought.

They think more about the thought.

The thought becomes a constant thought.

The thought becomes a want.

Thoughts of do I really need or want sometimes take place.

Once the thought is confirmed it takes root in the mind.

The purchase has been made mentally.

They research a supplier when ready.

They read the website

The ask questions.

They want answers

They want to be reassured.

They demand certainty.

They want a human touch.

They want a company that cares.

They want a conversation and don’t want to be sold to.

They simply want a good enough reason to buy from you.

So…

When someone gets in touch with your company ask yourself what is the reply or response?

  • No one buys face cream they buy youth.
  • No one buys a course he or she but a new life.
  • No one buys a Bentley they buy prestige.

If you try and sell them cream, a course or a Bentley … you will lose the sale because they have already bought that.

All the want is a good enough reason to buy from you and not your competition.

Success During Uncertain Times

It feels like the world has gone mad.

It does and can affect us.

Somethings we cannot control and cannot stop.

Somethings we can.

There’s never been a more important time in history to take control of your life.

There are things we can control and cannot control.

  • BREXIT – we cannot control
  • ECONOMIES – we cannot control
  • TRUMPLAND – we cannot control
  • RISE OF POPULISM – we cannot control
  • TAXES – we cannot control
  • REDUNDANCY – we cannot control
  • RETIRMENT – we cannot control
  • DEATH – we cannot control
  • GOOGLE - we cannot control
  • And frankly the reality is you have no idea if your job will be around next week despite the appearance of all being well at work.

If you are in business this affects you.

If you are in a job it affects you.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Business Up Despite The Madness

Just recently a new client came to me. His new project was failing and had never really got started. His initial investment was pretty huge to say the least.

He had taken the usual routes I see time and time again.

  • Going to a social media company.
  • Hiring an SEO expert.
  • Using a web design company.
  • Blah blah blah and I’ve seen it all before.

Blind the client with science and get them to pay monthly.

Promise them everything knowing that delivery is almost impossible.

The results are results I see time and time again.

  • Nil
  • Zero
  • 0

Not a damned thing!

Now when a client comes to me he or she has usually passed through at least 5-6 different experts or consultants. I am in the eyes of some the most expensive yet the reality is I am always the best investment because of results!

The new client above - the project is new.

The initial changes can take around 1-2 months after careful research and checks.

Yet

I always like to make an impact early on using one thing I do with all of my clients.

In the first week of running a test for just three dollars they have had three enquiries. Now that isn’t bad when you understand the volume of money spent so far for ZERO enquiries.

Just wait until we get going.

Now getting going involves a lot.

It’s an overhaul of everything they have.

The layouts, the design, the words, the images, the presentation, the scripts to open and close a sale and so much more to be looked through, tweaked, critiqued and added.

Yet NO huge changes, just adjustments to what they already have.

It takes time but when you are making no sales or not enough sales, time is something you have plenty of.

And of course unlike many of these new social media ‘experts’ I never promise to do anything overnight as it takes time, strategy, tactics and using tools that actually work toy build a long-term business.

I Know This

Let me share a couple of things I do know and have seen time and time again.

If you have what you might call a business that makes no real profit that isn’t a business.

If you are turning over £3 million and still making no profit that isn’t a business.

If you have everything in place and are loaded to the top with investment and loans yet still not making a profit – that isn’t a business.

And if you think you are doing marketing …

If you are doing social media everything yet still have no clients that isn’t marketing

If you are focused on SEO and positioning in Google yet still have no page listings or still no sales – that isn’t marketing.

If you are old school doing direct mail yet get no results from your direct mail… why are you doing it?

If you are old school with guys knocking on doors yet still get no results … why are you doing these things?

Because here’s the best advice that less and less people in business take.

You do not have to reinvent anything. Sales and marketing are a process that has been tested despite the changes. It isn’t a one off event it is a strategic process that has to be planned out and carefully executed.

And that doesn’t mean rebuilding everything. Most of the time it means simply taking what you have, making changes, testing and refining until the process is in place for you to increase your sales.

Now there might be things we cannot control, you cannot control taking place in what can seem like a crazy world. Yet the reality is this.

When it comes to sales or marketing your business that can be very carefully controlled.

I am yet to meet a client that hasn’t been to many other experts before they arrive on my doorstep.

I am yet to meet a client who’s problems in sales and marketing I have never been able to fix.

I am yet you meet a client that has never experienced an almost instant impact from my work yet.

I AM A SHOW OFF - GET OVER IT!

And I don’t mind showing off

I have increased client’s sales by £15,400 in just 3-days.

I have increased a client’s sales by £42,000 in 12-hours.

I have created converting direct mailers that have previously failed into million pound best sellers

I have generated sales overnight from client’s website.

All by doing small things that carry more power than big things.

And if you know what an Atom is… you know the power small can have?

So we might not be able to control what is going on in this mad world yet we can control the results of of business and its easier than you might have been told by many experts.

  • Plan your results
  • Use what is proven
  • Get tested solid advice
  • Put experts - NOT 'EXPERTS' in place
  • Dont be scared to change things if they aren't working
  • Stop what you're doing and take time to think.
  • Stop reading the news - it really doesn't matter to your business
  • Test what you do for results
  • Measure the results
  • Be in control
  • Get over social media - it really doesn't work for everyone.
  • SEO is dead unless you spend mountains of cash

Le Force Majeure

Seven days ago I had a visit from Le Force Majeure.

Seven days later I am one stone lighter a little weaker and although much better I am still in bed as I write this article.

There are something’s arriving that we cannot control.

Le Force Majeure - this simply means a far superior force than what most can overcome. Overpowering, overwhelming and all consuming. It was and it has been.

So superior in fact it took away my appetite, took away my hunger, removed my energy and replaced my optimistic positive outlook with an almost depressed start to the past seven days. Even my temperature has been like a roller coaster - 40-plus one day alone.

Now the good news is the past two nights I sweated so much I had to change the bedding five times in one of those nights! Yes, that's the good news because this is the last stand of the force as my body fights back. As I write I have slept a lot of today and feel much better. And this is all during my disc herniation on New Years day.

Sometimes there are powers so great that they just arrive and remove all of your daily or any other expectations and you have no control.

So why am I sharing such a story of misery?

I believe 2017 there will be a different kind of Le Force Majeure heading towards your business. It will and has already affected strategies, tactics, social media and online marketing in ways that have brought devastating results.

And like the flu virus I have had I had a feeling I might catch something as the village has been like a plague and when you live in the village so closely like ours the chances of escape are slim.

Le Force Majeure heading towards your business isn't something new. It is a force I have been teaching and talking about for years to my clients. It is the death of average, me-too, same-old, same old follow-the-leader marketing. This hugely affects your campaign impact, results, conversions, and effect as you as a person.

The problem is this; Not only has the web bred a new breed of marketing expert with no expertise it has also bred a belief that things that are easy are hard and hard are easy.

This kind of expertise teaches things like

  • It’s new so you should be doing it
  • Everyone else does this so you should also
  • Everyone is on Facebook
  • Adwords is best
  • Invest into SEO
  • All business does business on LinkedIn
  • You should definitely tweet daily
  • A good sales letter will sell you more
  • This is going to be huge

And more.

This is HIGH-RISK marketing.

Last year I don’t think I have ever seen so many new clients that are so overly fixated on doing what ISN’T WORKING! Yes actually fixated on doing things that just aren’t working in their businesses.

Like on client that has invested over £2,000 every month on SEO. This has gone on now (with his 3rd SEO company) for 10-months. He was confused that despite this endless cash being spent monthly they had poor positioning on Google and no increase in sales. The company kept telling him it simply takes time.

My team and myself took the account and carried out a very detailed check through everything that was apparently being done. It wasn’t being and the SEO that had been carried out was built around strategies that were in place over 10-years ago.

I have seen this time and time again with clients. I will write an article soon. I will name is something like WHY SEO IS DEAD because as a single strategy for any business it can be a death nail.

Or the client hat came to me and shared all of his endless post on LinkedIn. He boasted how some of his companies posts were getting more attention than any post similar. One post had 1800 comments and likes. I asked him this question.

“That’s a lot of likes, how many turn into leads and sales?”

His reply was this… ‘No sales as yet’

In fact no sales, no leads and no anything apart from spending hours with himself and team posting FREE content into LinkedIn. Again I see this time and time again.

Yet for 2017 I honestly, truly believe you, me, we are facing Le Force Majeure that will wipe out businesses by 2020 (in under 3-years). Le Force Majeure is not only an overwhelming force it is something that has more power than you think and can know.

Let me explain what it is for you.

Things we cannot control drive some forces. For example when the web really arrived for businesses this was a overpowering force or Le Force Majeure.

It meant that if you wanted not only to grow but survive in business you had to face this power and ride on it’s back. It couldn’t be defeated it simply had to be used as it moved.

As early as 1997 I started collecting email addresses from my clients as I thought it would be great to let them know what was happening via email as well as the more expensive direct mail I did at that time.

The problem I had was most of the clients I dealt with didn’t have something called an email address in those days. I would tell clients time and time again this was coming and they would have to ride the wave.

Of course there were the bigger companies, the corporations hat had their foundations so deep and so embedded in history that no change would affect them. They underestimated the Le Force Majeure of the times, ignored it and paid a heavy price.

Freeman, Hardy & Willis, Comet, Woolworths, C&A, Radio Rentals, and the mighty card shop Athena who went on to blame the internet for lost sales but the actual reality is they could have invested into the web and remained a leader. All are now extinct!

You are going to be faced with Le Force Majeure so great that one if the biggest issues now is not getting out of the noise and bombardment online but riding it, accepting it whilst mastering how to get seen through that noise.

Most will fail if they carry on in the old ways!

Those that work it out will win.

Here is just on e thing that will be huge and it’s nothing anyone has been talking about and it is something I have talked about for years.

BRANDING but not as you know it.

Most think of a BRAND as something as simple as a logo. Science has proved without a doubt that there is something much deeper taking place to create a successful brand.

I’ll happily share on with you right now.

The purpose of real branding is to create memory structures. These structures creates reminders and good thoughts associated with those reminders.

So part of the purpose of a BRAND is to create structures inside the memory. For a structure to be created to last it needs more than one element. Here’s an example for you.

The famous Coca Cola Christmas advert broken down has this.

  • The colour red (a fixed HEX col)
  • The white scroll font name
  • The big truck
  • The snow
  • Christmas time

The five elements of this brand Ad have created a memory structure in the brain itself built around familiar feel good theme, colours, music and of course the big steal – Christmas day itself. It is a Masterclass of MEME or memory building.

That isn’t the whole story of course.

Whilst in Scotland recently with my wife we took a drive to Stirling Castle where we came across a tapestry. The tapestry told a story. It was the story of a Unicorn and its sacrifice. The tapestry had no words yet it had hidden letters woven into the cloth.

Here is what was interesting for me and will apply to business.

These were created in the 1300s. This was a time when people could not read. This was also a dangerous time to spread religious teaching. So the tapestry had to share the word of god, the sacrifice of Christ and use images the locals that saw this could relate to. They also could understand the secret single letters woven through.

Why is this BRAND story important?

This is a whole other story but is still part of Le Force Majeure.

People as humans haven’t changed.

The habits of people have changed and changed hugely.

Who would ever have thought you’d see masses frozen to a spot with their heads down staring at a small screen while their thumbs performs a continuous movement.

Everything marketing has changed and the pace will pick up even faster. If you fail to do this how are you going to get seen? Are you going to simply keep posting on social media or doing the same old thing whilst hoping it'll work?

You will have to make a major step forward into your BRAND more than ever before but not BRANDING as you might traditionally think – those old branding days have well and truly gone.

The Little Black Dress

The Little Black Dress

Recently my wife read an autobiography about a famous designer Diane Von Furstenberg. That is her above.

Despite her owning many businesses and business empires she continually refers to something in her book she calls her little black dress.

This dress is now named the ‘iconic’ wrap over dress.

Here’s what happened.

She designed a small dress that everyone loved. They loved it so much it sold in the millions.

As a creative she gets bored. Every now and then she would ignore the black dress project and do something totally different. When she faced bankruptcy or being broke again she would go back to the dress. the dress project in effect it would save her and always promised stability of income.

That’s not the precise details but it's the rough details all the same.

I also have a little black dress.

That dress is a project I began in 1999. It’s a project I have seen huge success with and ignored continually.

Now and then I come back to it.

It makes me very good money.

Recently we kickstarted the project again. It was idle after my big divorce in 2010. It had sat there broken and ignored for almost 8-years yet it is also a high-demand project.

Around a year ago I decided it would be the right time to re-ignite my little black dress. Since the new start, we have sold literally hundreds upon hundreds of manuals.

The goals are set high.

Our conversions are currently at

Just over 10% on the front/lead end.

Around 15% on the back-end.

We have four major products built into the funnel

Front-end - £1

  • Middle-end £245.00
  • Back-end £1,995
  • High-end £10,000
  • WE SELL ALL OF THEM!

I don’t mind sharing with you that we are well on target for our first big push which is 2,000 sales (do the math).

Just in case you are not sure my little black dress project is my Hair Salon Owners Company - Salon Punk.

Of course, I’m well qualified - I was a hairdresser from 1982-2003 and an owner of 3-salons.

But how was this done after a project sitting there for so many years doing nothing?

Easier than most will know or think.

There are certain facts that just never change in business. Regardless of what is new or old, there are some things that just don't change.

For example, you might have the greatest marketing team in the world in your office yet if the targeting is perfect the sales will be low or even none.

If the core message doesn't stand inside the mental conversation of the target the conversions will remain very low.

If the presentation doesn't give the eye what the eye expects I can tell you this the visitor will come and then just as fast go!

Yet it really isn't too difficult yet most make it difficult.

Here is why.

Marketing has become a restrained by too many amateur rules set by those with no real experience.

Most rules are rules that will restrict the sales. I know I've seen this time and time again with my clients.

And you might have everything in place yet the reality is you are not getting sales or even decent conversions.

This is usually a targeting issue.

So let me ask you … Do you have a little black dress? Do you have a business or business idea that you know is good but the results are simply not good enough?

Since I began working with clients in all kinds of business world's corporations are the most difficult and self-destructive.

Why?

The email above began with a call.

"Alan, we love your stuff, love your website and love what we can see.

The man went on to tell me he is the CEO of a large London corporation. He told me his team needed more edge. He told me they needed more creative ideas, thoughts and tools. He told me after going through everything he would speak with his marketing director and then arrange for myself to head over to their headquarters to spend a day or two with their team.

Everything ended great over the phone.

Now me being me my brain dropped into gear right away. I had ideas based on what he told me, ideas for leverage, stability, growth, innovation and how to give them distinctive capability fast!

I heard nothing back.

I waited.

Now, what does that mean?

Let's think about this and learn from this.

The average salary for a marketing director is £86,165 according to figures online.

A really good marketing director can easily earn as much as £140,000 and even more.

His boss (the man I spoke with) is paying him and his team more than well.

Yet, his boss has had to go outside his team and ask for expert advice.

Why?

Because his highly paid team are not delivering results.

Now this marketing director that isn’t delivering results has told the CEO he does not want to deal with an expert outside the company due to the fact I look too creative, eccentric and different.

Interesting right?

Here’s the problem.

Marketing isn’t as hard as marketing are men telling you they are simply covering their own lack of abilities. Yet marketing men that are trained and defined through the formality of expectation of how things should work – according to their training – training that was laid down in marketing manuals in the fifties!

Yet the world has changed and frankly so has the world of marketing.

The changes in the marketing process are profound. So profound in fact that I believe that over the past 3-years marketing has taken a quantum leap of epic proportions never seen before. I also believe that it will take ten years or more for companies and their internal teams to catch up unless they fast track through external expertise.

Do you think a marketing manager goes home and reads the very latest of what works and doesn't work in the minds of the consumer in bed at night? No of course not it's simply a job to him or her. External experts do - I do!

Yet when decisions are taken by marketing dinosaurs that are locked into restrictions, boundaries and fixed rules of how things should and shouldn’t be this is a danger for all companies – your company.

That is why marketing in most companies only supports the infrastructure, the ages and survival and rarely the vision of the company – if they even have a vision.

I am happy to be called eccentric. I am happy to be called too creative. I am happy to be told the marketing chief freaked out when he realised I have a tattoo or two.

Unless you take a leap of faith into the new world of marketing I want to tell you this. On the basis of a decision made by an employee, you could lose your business. I know because time and time again I have seen this over the years.

Marketing chaos isn’t just a blog post it is a reality for corporations. Throwing endless cash at a wall and praying it’ll stick isn’t going to cut it anymore. Posting endless on social media won't and probably doesn’t work for you. Does it?

We are moving into the marketing age of distinctiveness and transformation.

So it isn’t what you expected?

I know a line or two from old bible texts. There is one line I love and it is this.

‘Fear is the expectation of things not yet beheld’ Hebrews 11:1

I like it because life and business can be like that.

We can build expectations based on what we want to happen.

When those expectations fail to be met or next expectation can be filled with fear.

And as life carries on so does the fears of anything working out.

So fear now becomes our set expectation rather than hope. Interesting right?

Yet what if you can create expectations that become a reality?

It’s a lot easier than you might have ever been taught or heard.

There’s a woman I know that is obsessed by the future. She goes to everyone and anyone that will predict her future. She wants her future to be just perfect. She expects her future to be just perfect.

Her expectation is met with disappointment every time.

Why?

She expects her business to do well just because it should do well.

She expects her life to run well because she expects her life to run well.

She expects her home relationships to be perfect because she expects then to be perfect.

None of them are perfect and the reason for that is very simple.

What she is doing today is a reflection of what her current state is tomorrow. Her current state tomorrow is a direct result of what she did yesterday.

In other words what we plant right now is what will grow in the future. So if we want expectations to be met we must plan accordingly and aim to make sure we hit our expectations.

I had a client that wanted to grow his business to £500,000 per year. He expected it to grow to that amount. His business was new and had been given a good investment into it’s creation.

After I did some consulting for him we talked about his goal of £500,000. Top hit a number the path to that number has to be carefully worked out. Based on people traffic and then how nay of those people would convert or buy based on average I could now report to him he needed a particular number of people going through his store. To drive those people through his store meant he would have to do a certain amount of advertising. Advertising is also easy to measure when done properly. Each advert has a system where the numbers of viewers, shows and conversion are tracked.

Now after giving him the numbers to hit £500,000 guess what he did?

He rejected the plan as he didn’t want to make the investment into what was needed to get his goal of £500,000.

At this stage, I decided not to work with him as I felt his expectations were distorted and not only would he be disappointed but that disappointment would reflect on myself.

I went my way and he carried on his way.

Around eight months later his store closed at a huge loss. His two new Landover cars, his beautiful freshly decorated new home and most of what he owned including his store were not only closed but he was declared bankrupt.

It wasn’t what he expected yet his actions each day were already revealing the outcome for him. He ignored the actions and felt he deserved the outcome despite the messages.

It is hard to deny the reality of cause and effect. It is difficult to say we don’t reap what we sow because the reality of what takes place reveals otherwise.

If you have an expectation of an outcome you really need to ask yourself what are you doing right now for that expected outcome to take place?

The future – your future – in certain things can easily be seen and that vision is easier than you think.

For example, if you hate your job but never do anything about and yet hope that one day you’ll be rich beyond your wildest dreams what do you think the reality will be?

If your business isn’t doing well and yet you never actually change anything to allow your business to change direction what do you think the expectation and outcome will be?

Transformation comes through change. Change comes through actions. Actions are planned according to where you are right now. Are you in a good place?

Are you in a bad place?

Are you off track?

Will what you are doing give you the expectation and transformation needed.

If you had to tell someone where you will be in 12 months how would you reply? Why would you reply that way? Do you think your reply is accurate and could be expected according to what you are doing right now?

If you want to know hat your future expectations are all you really have to do is look at what you are doing right now.

A man that had a serious illness wanted to know if he would live to see his children grow old. The man was told he could take a certain course of action and that action would give him a good chance of success with his health.

He had two options.

Ignore the course of action and just hope everything will be fine.

Take the medicine and build his hopes and expectations around recovery and a transformed health.

In other words, he had an opportunity to plan his future.

How about you?

If you have expectations of certain things outcomes in life and business yet those expectations are not being met you need to take some action to put yourself back on track.

Everyone loses his or her way now and then, it isn’t a bad thing. Everyone also has the same opportunity to put him or herself back on track.

Your future is a choice.

Your transformation is a choice.

Your expectations are a choice.

Your CHOICE!

Not tool long ago I shared my own stay where I was not just broke but broke, homeless, divorced, alone and spending my nights sitting with dead men’s bones in a graveyard. I saw no way out in those days.

My family was at a full-blown war with me. I had lost everything. My own expectations of life had certainly been thrown out of the window.

Just to clarify at this stage

I had lost my car

I had lost my family

I had lost my house

I had lost my business

I had lost my senses

I was losing my health fast

Not only did I not have £100 pounds in my pocket I didn’t have £1! I was borrowing pennies to get a bus to and from to different places.

What a mess.

In my own life, I always aim high. I expect to win. I expect the best outcome. I never think of failure. I do what I need to do to make things happen.

Yet this time, the weight of life had become so gigantically great I was being crushed to death literally.

I had expected a wonderful life with wonderful everything. Now here I was in 2010 with absolutely not a thing to my name. I had gone from   massive five bedroomed self-built home with a one-acre garden and everything I needed in life to no car, no garden and living in a borrowed room that was just 8 x 6 foot in size. Utterly depressing!

Can you imagine how shattered my own expectations were?

I had a choice.

Sink and literally die.

Take control and make something anything happen.

I am here now. I have the most wonderful life with my wife. A good business, a great home and everything I need in my life.

I know transformation is possible. I know your expectations despite falling can be met.

All you have to do is pick yourself up and make the changes needed.

Business is the same. Business is s reflection of life – your life.

If nothing is working right now, if you need transformation, if you really want your expectations to be met you have to do something different.

That something different might be uncomfortable. It might go against your own grain. It might make you feel a fear you haven’t felt before.

Yet you know that you have to make changes to hit expectations. And you might have no given up and now expect nothing but the worst.

I know a guy that expects nothing but the worse. Recently he set up a new business. I called him one week in and he told me everything was a disaster. His expectation had been set at zero before he started. He expected failure and got failure.

Here’s what is interesting; where you set your expectation despite what you do that expectation will be carried out. He was doing what looked like a new successful mission to get his business off the ground yet he expected disaster. Guess what? After just NINE weeks his business is over!

I wasn’t surprised and you know what he said to me? He said I knew it would turn out like this!

So ask yourself with you life and your business what is it you actually expect? Can you fine-tune those expectations? Can you make them more realistic, more in harmony and in tune with your own needs and desires?

It’s fine reading about the mountains that others have climbed yet their mountain isn’t yours. You know you are going to need to create your own path. A path that is in harmony with how you feel, how you think and of course your own capabilities.

There is so much spoken about being positive and how everything is possible.

That isn’t true, it’s a lie.

Not everything is possible because a mantra claims everything is possible.

Not everything will turn out fine because of a mantra that is said everything will be fine if you think positive.

What you need to do in your business and life is set and expectation based on your abilities and possibilities. Then work in harmony with them.

And if you cannot do these things alone – ask for help.

Keeping Business Going During Summertime

Summertime creates a weird feeling for businesses. It is slow and harder to stay busy. So rather than do what you should be doing most businesses just sit and wait for something to happen or they carry on doing what has never really worked for them.

Selling to your customers isn’t rocket science. Your clients have buying patterns that are easily tapped into. It might be slow right now but guess what – by September your marketplace will begin to pick-up again and you will be busier than you are right now.

So when millions are on holiday lets be honest regardless of the offers you send out right now it’s going to be tough to distract them from buying from you when they are snorkelling or sunbathing on a tropical beach!

Yet this is a big preparation time for a lot of my smarter clients. They know that you can’t start everything once the marketplace settles back after holidays they prepare now for the busy buying period.

If you prepare now this means that not only are you ready for the buying period you have everything in place to take more of your market share.

In real terms, the above means this.

You could easily increase your sales by preparing your campaigns in advance. Good advance preparation can help you aim towards becoming a market leader.

I have one client that spends around 9/10-months every year preparing for his one big 2-month campaign. I am yet to see his campaigns fail. Even when no one is buying he is preparing the copy the strategy, the systems and delivery and more. This advance planning has helped him stay at the very top of his game year after year.

I have another client that has really just started planning in advance. The difference to her business has been huge. It's the difference between transformational marketing and average marketing of a business.

So if you are slow right now this really is a time to plan ahead. Ask yourself lots of questions, are things really working like you need them to work or are you simply accepting mediocre right now?

Are your current campaigns working?

Well, are they?

Don’t sit and wait for the next thing to take you along on a whim. Now is the perfect time for you to make some changes based on what is proven to work and refine your business and ask questions.

Doing what hasn't worked for months never mind years never makes any sense to me yet that is what some in business keep on doing. The same thing because that is what they do. It could be a lack of creativity in your marketing team. it can be an over-reliance on social media and all things web. It could be a poor message to market or a lack of engagement to your marketplace.

Whatever the reason is for your business you cannot allow things to carry on the way they are going. Get advice, get help and take a serious review to make sure things can be changed so you to can experience true transformation in your marketing.

Also, let me share this with you.

I mentioned earlier an interesting fact for me is the amount of clients that have worked with other experts before they reach me.

The story is mostly the same. They know of me, think my prices are high and will either come to me when they feel they can afford it or they come to me finally when they have spent on five previous experts and are desperate.

I just want to repeat something I say on my website time and time again.

The first thing I do when we work together is to find a way for you to get back your investment as fast as possible. Should You Use Direct Mail?

Yes.

Yes because it works.

This morning in my mailbox I had direct mail (letters) from Amazon, Apple, Google and PayPal. I have had letters from other web companies. It’s also not uncommon to see these guys using TV more than ever to keep you in the loop.

Keep reading because this will help you.

I also want to share this with you; my most successful clients ALL use direct mail. Direct mail is in a surge right now.

Are you using direct mail?

Why you absolutely should be using direct mail every week.

Recently I had a client that wanted to contact someone. That someone would be their biggest client to date if the client could be contacted and a deal closed.

My client had emailed her target numerous times over a 6-month period with no reply. They had sent them Facebook messages with no reply. They had found people who knew them and asked them to contact them with absolutely no reply.

She asked me this one question.

Alan how do I get the mobile number of this client so I can at least speak to them.

My reply was this.

Use Direct mail.

How?

Clearly, I’m not going to reveal the exact process right now but what I can share is still hugely valuable.

Let me be clear here.

I am talking about using paper and envelopes or another packaging - NOT email as some now consider email as direct mail - IT ISN'T!

The direct mail is part of a carefully constructed system of direct mailers.

Every word in the mailer is carefully chosen, trigger loaded, buzzword based and is what I call conversation focused.

That means the start, the middle and the end are all superbly coherent fused and masterfully put together for one thing and one thing only – to get a response.

There is more.

The envelope, the stamp, the cover deign, the cover notes, the layout and design of the mailer, the delivery option and some other secrets.

Also, there is more.

The response mechanism at this side, the script, the conversation, and the call to action, the emotional reaction and tone of the response and is the response by phone, email, SMS or messenger?

There is even more.

Every direct mail needs to consider things like, call-outs, hand notes, jonsons boxes, hand -written notes, font choices, factoids and more.

And there is even more.

The delivery of the initial promise, the follow-up and any other physical reaction to being carried out during the system or campaign.

Back to my client's direct mail.

So I helped and consulted and advised on a campaign that initially had five direct mailers. The number five had been based on certain criteria after research had been carried out on the target.

The mailers had been designed and laid out according to what we felt (we don’t always know) would or could work.

Just one day after the direct mail went out my client had received an email.

The email had a thank you and a mobile number and a time my client was to call the person that responded!

A result!

Why is direct mail going through a resurrection and resurgence?

Think about it and you will see the answer is very simple. The noise from email, social media and other imagery and words is so great now its very hard to get heard. Yes even social media and the web can be highly targeted but when you realise estimates can go as high as 20,000 marketing messages pass through the eyes of the average person daily you really have to do something different.

I have a client that took just over £6,800 from a single direct mailer that cost him just £2 to run. I have other clients that have generated well into the millions using just direct mail. I even have another client at invests just over one million euros per month on direct mail.

Why you should use direct mail today.

When direct mail is done badly or wrong the results can be zero. If the results are zero this can be a loss for you

Direct mail works. It’s direct, it's focused, it massively profitable and will give you many more times conversion than any email will.

I myself started using direct mail around 1993/4 and used since. I have a huge track record with very successful, highly profitable direct mail writing and strategies.

The Parrot Escaped!

When I get up in the morning and head for breakfast I always sit in the same chair.

It looks out onto large trees. The bird noise in the morning is pretty deafening. It’s funny how I can identify the birds from the songs now. Now and then I can see a red hawk as well as all the usual pigeons, crows, and other none exotic birds.

Today when I sat down I heard a screech that I have heard before but never heard here. When I was young my father kept parrots and other birds. They have a sound that is very piercing and very loud.

So when I heard the bird noise this morning I immediately thought of a parrot. Yet we don’t have parrots here, they don’t survive alone in the wild.

I grabbed my binoculars as I could see a large bird on the tall birch tree in front of my apartment. There it was a huge green parrot sitting at the top of the tree making a racket!

Here’s the thing.

It has clearly escaped captivity.

It now has to survive.

It can only survive if it adapts and adapts very fast!

It will have to do something different. It’ll have to eat something different. It’ll have to play wild until it becomes wild. Its life has gone from comfort to survival it just doesn’t know it yet. It's still overwhelmed by the fact it is free, flying around and maybe for the first time in years it’s able to stretch its wings and fly across opens space. There he goes, from the top of the tall silver birch to the large 40-meter conifer.

Last night he was probably in his safe little cage. Today he is flying truly free as a bird.

I can’t see him now.

It got me thinking, though.

There are times in business or in life when things happen very unexpectedly. If we fail to adapt our business or our life flow just withers and dies.

Recently with the UK leaving the EU I’ve seen and heard some really interesting comments. Comment son TV and comments on the streets.

A change arrived that no one really expected. That change cannot be unchanged. The truth now for anyone in business, anyone thinking about business or anyone that is now feeling free is this.

An adaptation or evolution or change has to take place in the way you do things. If it doesn’t take place there could be a negative effect.

Now some will sit and wait for something to happen.

Some will take advice and not work on the advice they are given.

Some will even try some new advice and never go beyond trying.

Yet the world is changing, the world has changed.

There is nothing we can do about things out of our control but are we looking at the things in our control?

Someone said to me the other day

Alan, you’ve really changed since we first met.

Now we first met over 30 years ago so how could I be the same?

Every cell in my body has been replaced and is replaced every 7-years. The only old part of me is my memories; the rest is renewed and refreshed. My whole being has gone through 7 full body changes since I birth.

That means, of course, I have changed.

That also means you have changed.

For example, you might have run marathons when you were 21-28 years old but that doesn’t mean you can run them later in life. You have to adapt always.

Like the green parrot on the tree today.

Now I am no prophet but I do know that if that parrot fails to adapt it will be dead pretty quickly.

Yet the parrot has a secondary problem to overcome and it is this.

Deep embedded, repeated routine that is harder to shift than the deepest stain on the whitest sheet.

It has never had a life outside a cage. It has never had to find its own food. It has never had the habit ingrained by its mother on what food to choose. It has never found its own shelter.

This really is a change or die scenario.

A very long time ago a group of parrots found freedom in Windsor England. It was said they would die very quickly die.

Surprisingly they didn’t. Not only did they survive they thrived to the point they are a nuisance in some areas.

How do they survive?

They changed their behaviour.

Now listen up close because I am going to say this once for you.

If you are struggling to the point that the changes you need are not coming if you fail to change your behaviour you will not survive.

You can only survive through change.

Sitting and thinking about it changes nothing.

Sitting and moaning about it changes nothing.

Walking around looking at your feet change changes nothing.

Running the same marketing campaigns that have already proven to fail for your business changes absolutely nothing.

No change means no change – it’s as simple and as uncomplicated as that.

I’ve been doing some cool stuff that is stripping back layers and getting into the core of what works.

Works in life and works in business. Some of the results have been pretty astonishing, to say the least.

I hope that parrot survives. I am a fan of the underdog, the rebel and the non-conformist. I always gave been. Maybe that is because most of the happiest success stories I see are those that ride against the wave of the norm.

I like the idea that the parrot feels free, he is happy and he has escaped the confines of a caged life.

Part of me wants to catch the parrot and save him.

Part of me wants to let him go and see if he works out his own future.

Life’s like that.

We work it out and are happy doing it.

We struggle and cry and wish our life were the life of someone else.

Either way now and then it’s possible we all need some help.

Old School vs. New School or

FUSION MARKETING?

Old school marketing is using sales reps, cold-calling, flyers, and anything else including FAX machines to spread the word of your campaign.

New school is email, social media, websites and anything else that flies through the web in or even out of the office.

Old school is seen as expensive.

For example here, is an actual case study.

Old school team wages

  • £65,000 - £115,000 for a marketing director
  • £24-£35,000 for other members of a marketing team.

It isn’t uncommon for me to go and meet a team of twelve people working in a marketing office or suite.!One client I have was spending over £230,000 on wages for his marketing team.

Direct mail can cost as low as £1 per letter or as high as you want to go. I worked on one direct mailer that cost around £25,000 to send 10,000 letters. I also worked on another that was costing over £1,000,000 per month.

If you take the back of a Sunday magazine and place your advert there it will cost you around £70-£100k for a full-page glossy advert.

And most of the time you don’t have to have a team you can do it all yourself.

What would you choose old or new?

The truth!

Why is it I see and meet more old school marketers that are rich and successful and many less online marketers that are hardly making a penny?

The reason is simpler than you might be thinking and then I will tell you what I prefer and advise you to do.

THE WEB PROBLEM

Web marketers usually try to do everything themselves. They sit with laptops in cafes, on a sofa or even on a beach (how they do that with sun glare is beyond me) and try to do everything themselves.

They can email endlessly, SMS to death and more yet the reality is most web marketers that I have met over the past 2-years and more struggle to make ends meet.

Why?

They fail to work out some very simple formulas and data.

  • Return on investment
  • Customer acquisition cost
  • Breakeven vs. lifetime value
  • And the biggest cost of all – time!

If you have no idea what your time is worth you’ll run around like a headless chicken trying and hoping something will work at some point.

Most online marketers believe that if they simply keep throwing it out there something will come back in.

Here’s another critical thing to think about.

  • Not all of your targets are on Facebook
  • Not all of your clients like social media
  • Not all of your clients use email
  • Not all of your clients feel good about SMS into their space.

Coke a cola invested a year's marketing budget into social media rather than old school media they have been running for decades. The result was a 5% drop in market share. For a company as large as coke that was huge. They now stick strictly to what they know.

Recently I did a trade show in Manchester. There were over 7000 businesspeople at this event. Almost every conversation was the same and went a little like this.

We use mostly Facebook and LinkedIn. When asked about results again the response was mostly the same… not good!

At the same event, I spoke to a guy that does just direct mail and nothing online. I asked him about his results and his reply was similar. He told me his response was very good, business was just fine but his costs for marketing were just far too high.

So what’s the answer?

It’s easier than you think but it needs you to have a re-set of your mind and marketing actions to make it work.

FUSION

I call it FUSION. It’s always been part of my AFS METHOD and has proved itself time and time again for my clients.

Let's take a step back a little.

You can send a simple direct mail/flyer/postcard to a home at a low rate. It can start with a number as low as 25 houses. This is what I call part of a seeding strategy and a warm-up strategy. It’s also very old school. You would send a number of these, not just one! One send will do nothing!

After the campaign starts you then support that with a more guerilla style campaign. What does this mean? It means you need to get more information about the household so you again set up a way to do that using old school guerilla style marketing.

Once that is in place you can support this with a more visual marketing in the local area. This can be done through THE placement of Ads where your marketplace will see these ads. They must be very simple and direct using triggers and buzzwords that apply to your customer.

Hang on in here don’t stop reading I will explain everything and why it applies to your business in a second.

At the same time, everything you do is fully supported with an online campaign using proven Facebook tricks and other social media tricks that have already been tested to work. There is more but I don’t want to complicate it for you right now.

Recently we ran a campaign for a client using just that very method. Everything was tested and eventually put together in a fusion campaign supported by my AFS METHODOLOGY. Not only were his results good his response went up by 1,700% in a single day! He was happy because not only was his failed marketing for the past 2-years now fixed he was also making money.

Let me share a short story with you about a client that was so fixed the results for him were disastrous.

This client had cash from investors. The investors were Russians. These guys are tough. They asked and paid for my advice. I put forward a plan for them that would do the following.

  • Use low cost-high-return guerilla marketing
  • Create a distinctive USP that really did stand out
  • A fusion plan that had been carefully planned through for cost and return
  • A system that put their core message back into the minds of their buyers

And so much more

They had invested 4-weeks of my time into this plan.

At the same time, I didn’t realise they were also talking and asking for advice from an ad agency.

The agency put together a very predictable plan.

Focus on the logo/brand and do as much social media as possible. They would buy likes and hire cheap labour in the Philippines to post content daily.

I was dead set against that whole plan.

A solid return on investment hadn’t been worked out

An acquisition cost hadn’t been thought through

No consideration of any kind of outcome was in place. They were simply told that they would get the message out there.

They asked my thoughts and I told them blunt it is a plan with failure written all over it.

Why?

They had failed to plan and hence planned to fail!

18-mothns later I received and email from the director. He apologised for what happened at the time and told me the company had folded and that he wished he had stuck to my directions.

The problem is this.

They were too fixated on a single plan of action and the world of marketing is now very different.

You have to be smarter, you have to be clever, you have to think, you have to plan and you have to minimise risk. Never before has the opportunity to so that been greater.

Are you doing fusion marketing?

I’ve been watching a TV show on Netflix called Chefs Table. For the record – just brilliant! All the chefs had traits in common, one being the need to be the very best and succeed.

The first chef in the series is a young man named

Massimo Bottura.

That's him above.

He decided to open his place first in Italy. It was average and he couldn’t find his flow. In fact, he struggled for years living and only just surviving on crumbs.

One day an old lady knocked on his door. She was in her sixties and a very typical older rounder Italian mamma, dressed in a floral country dress with her long hair tied in a bun. She was well fed but had one problem, she was losing her eyesight.

The young guy laughed.

She said I could help you make a certain dish incredibly well. That dish being particular pasta.

She left saying she lived just across the road, and he could give her a call anytime.

The young guy smiled and thought it would be nice to help out an old lady.

That lady changed his life and was the mentor he needed to propel him into worldwide fame.

Here is why.

She had what you cannot buy from a book and that was her experience and time in her life from years before.

She had what he didn’t and that was time and experience creating pasta the way it of the old traditions of Italy.

She also had technique he had never seen. This technique had been passed through generations from her grandparents and grandparents before.

It wasn’t written in books but if you tasted you knew it was the real thing.

Massimo couldn’t get enough of her and her knowledge. He was and is a famous chef that wanted to be famous for his great work. She had given him the keys to his chef kingdom to the point Massimo started to gather his Michelin stars (recognition).

One day he had a call from Paris. Not just Paris but Paris’s top restaurateur. They had called to ask him if he would join them in Paris and teach them what the old lady had taught him.

He went and one thing led to another including his long stay in New York where he met his wife.

Finally, he had fame, he had glory and he had a restaurant that had been voted the world's best at what he does.

I loved the end of the documentary and here is why.

Massimo had everything yet he decided to walk away from what he had to start again – strip it all back and give more thought to his work at a root level.

So he went back to Italy, found his old mentor who was still living, set up a new restaurant and placed her in charge of training a particular pasta.

He lives there with his wife, their children and the old lady who not only still trains his team but he says to this day gave him what he has right now

Again the show is on Netflix and it is called Chefs Table.

Not that long ago I had an email from a young woman. She had been a mentor-student of mine. During her mentoring, she wasn’t quite sure what direction she wanted to go yet her father insisted that she work with me.

Anyway, I got her email and it simply said that she had got a job with Ogilvy Agency. During the interview, she told them she had worked with and been trained by no other than - Alan Forrest Smith. Thankfully the interviewer knew of me and gave her the job despite her lack of experience.

No, she isn’t a copywriter making tonnes of cash yet she got her dream job after college and that make her happy.

Today ... This morning I had a call from a very good friend. We met in 2005 when I first mentored him. Honestly, he was all over the place and very very broke with another failing business under his belt. Through working with me, he discovered direct marketing, headline writing, strategies and just about everything direct marketing.

His current business is now in its fourth year. His takings online alone are just under £900,000.

His takings offline are around £300,000. When we met he was dead broke. We are now best of friends.

The point being is this.

Everything starts somewhere – everything.

Everything is connected to the last part of the puzzle.

It all leads to where you are right now.

Time and life aren’t long enough to endlessly hope and pray it’ll work… is it?

This is what I would call a perfect example of direct response marketing for the 21st century

I thought I’d share with you a little more detail of a client of mine.

You might have read about him here before.

He is a good client.

He has specialist services.

His business has been open for over 20 years.

He is old school.

There was no strategy.

It was all about try something and hope it works.

It didn’t work and wasn’t working.

He wanted to get leads from the web rather than those hit and miss ways using magazine adverts.

When he came to us he had already been through a process of trying to get a website live. The website they had been in progress for a huge TWO-YEARS and was still not live.

So here is what happened and I want to share what took place so you really understand what’s involved in using the web whilst fusing it with old school marketing for results!

The first meeting we had it became clear very quickly they needed everything. They had great service and a great speciality but didn’t have any system in place for constant flow for their business.

I did what I did which is sit and listen.

Ask them what they wanted.

They wanted 30 leads from the web, as that would make them more than happy. This meant starting from zero.

Here’s the process.

The first meeting we had he arrived in his old BMW.

The 3rd meeting we had he arrived in his new red Ferrari.

The final meeting we had before hand over he left that meeting to go and pick up his new Rolls Royce.

We took his results online from zero to well over 300 leads every month. This didn’t include leads that came through the phone that was never tracked or measured.

Here’s what I do know.

  • He bought a new huge house.

  • He bought NEW Rolls Royce.

  • He bought another business.

  • He doubled his office space.

And, so much more than I can’t write here now due to my own time restraints.

All of the above took place over a 3-year plan.

Nothing happened by accident.

Nothing fell into anyone’s lap.

Nothing was pure luck of the draw.

If you take your business serious you’d better get in the business of serious marketing.

  • It was a 3-month plan

  • Then a 6-month plan

  • Then a 9-month plan

  • Then a 12-month plan and so on

Once the model was successfully working we simply scaled everything up and they got their results.

Yes, it wasn’t cheap if you want to know what their invoice was as a payment, yet it cost them nothing because what they paid was a tiny fraction in relation to the results each month.

Just out of interest from other clients.

I have a client that spends ONE MILLION EUROS every month on marketing. Can you image what the returns are?

I have another client that spends just £10,000 every month.

I actually have another client that spends around $5 per day on marketing their business.

All get results; all results are relative to their business.

So if you are taking your business serious you’d better start looking at the scientific process of marketing as a serious business.

YET

And this is the best YET you need to know.

Marketing that is well thought out, planned and built around scientific marketing principles should and will cost you nothing – not a single penny.

BUT

It’s rarely an instant fix – very rarely!

So are you making this mistake because it's probably one of the most common mistakes I see with businesspeople and it is this?

Do you invest a tonne into your office, your tech gear, your staff, your paintwork, and new sofas and just about everything else and then – hope and pray you’ll attract the right clients?

That’s a huge mistake.

And the reason I really wanted to share the solicitors story with you is to reveal just how much work, effort, time and blood, sweat and tears go into creating a successful campaign.

Finally, look at this.

Do you know how many marketing directors or marketers are employed out there?

Do you know how nay of these guys that are paid to bring in a result continually fail to bring in a result?

I don’t know the numbers precisely but I can tell you I did work for a client that had a wages bill for his marketing team for just over £230,000 a year. They were making huge losses because the phone never rang.

In fact to be more precise they had around one call a day when I went to meet them or five leads a week.

The first campaign I ran for them gave them 17 calls in the first hour and I still charged them less than what they were paying the director of marketing never mind the rest of their team.

If you want to build a truly successful business you really need to build a solid foundation around systems, strategies and of course good service or product.

There can only be one way to measure the success of your team and it isn’t by their own qualifications or experience it has to be by results.

It takes time.

It takes investment.

It takes commitment.

Then and only then will you see results that your competition will die for.

SUMMER TIME -Time For What?

The school is out so if your town, city or village is anything like most at this time of the year everything has gone pretty quiet into your salon.

Now let me tell you this.

It’s as good as impossible to pull people in when they are not there but that is for another post. The real question is what are you going to do or what should you do in this in the slow spell?

This is a period of the year I love and my clients that are the most successful love. I’ll tell you why in a moment but first let us start with a story. It isn’t true but it’s based on a lot of people I have met in business over the years.

There are two people in a salon business that both have a business.

The Story of Tom and John.

Neither man knows each other.

Tom loves summer. Despite his business just doing ok, he loves going away, sitting in the sunshine and doing nothing apart from a drink, a swim and all the usual things we are told we should do on holiday. During the summer he will spend up his cash reserves completely. He knows that in advance and he knows because she's been repeating the same pattern year after year since he started in business.

He goes in, hopes it's all going to be busy and places an offer or two in his advertising here and there hoping that he'll be busy when it's slow.

He has no idea how the business will be when he gets back after her holiday but he refuses to miss a holiday.

John thinks different.

John’s business opened over 7-years ago, he knows it takes effort and work. He also knows he can never afford to just hope.

John still has a holiday. He still has a drink or two on the beach with his family. He still does a lot of what most people do in the summer. There is a difference though and it is this.

When away John relaxes but he relaxes smartly. He learnt the hard way years ago that the only way HIS business will be a success is if he carefully planned that success. Planning meant he could track his progress, he could keep on track and he could put in place things that were working and things that wouldn't work he would remove.

He plans his turnover. He then plans how to reach that turnover. He plans his money, his income and all of his possible sales. For John doing this can be a little painful yet he knows the key to his business is planning and when he plans well the results always come in.

Tom does the same old thing and gets the same old thing back in return while John’s business grows every year without fail.

This should raise a question for you?

So what will you be doing this summertime in your business while it’s a little slower?

I stop everything, sit in a corner and write notes based on what my results have been so far in the year. In my business and I am sure your business is about results. Results in sales, turnover and of course success for my clients.

If the desired results are not in I want to know why and I want to know the changes I have to make. I’ve learnt in life I cannot wait for anything to happen I have to make it happen and that includes changes.

Salon Web pages and communications

I will go through all of my essential web pages. Over 93% of my own traffic now comes through a mobile phone. So are my pages fully optimised and converting for a smartphone? I feel this has made a change to the way we present certain messages. That is for another post as it is too long for this now. Web pages can be easily tracked, tested and measured for success or failure these days. I look at my analytics and make the changes I have to make. It’s always interesting for me that a lot of clients rarely change their web pages yet that is a little like never changing the shop front window.

Salon Imagery

Images go in the eye and make an impact. Now and then I get it wrong so I like to make the changes I need to change. I personally use Photoshop Elements for my own images. Images on a website that are never changed make no impact. It isn't uncommon for me to change my main images EVERY MONTH. For example, the previous header I used on OB failed miserably although I liked it. It dropped response rates dramatically. Why? Most visitors won't and don't go beyond the top of a page so you need to get it absolutely right. I changed the image 4-times in a single week. Most changes were single words. Yes single words can make a difference and sometimes a huge difference. Now it converts again.

Salon Engagement and Social Media

This is still hard for even me to get a grip of – social media. We test everything time and time again. The past few months we ramped up the tests on Facebook with what I can call huge turnaround results compared to what we did in the past.

The past few weeks I have been running tests on something I have never been able to get a grip of – Twitter. I have to say the results are impressive so far but not complete so maybe I will share more again. Finally Instagram. Again I used to simply put photos up there but the past 4-weeks I have been testing a few things with some pretty cool results but I am still not 100% happy to go full out on this one yet

And of course, I learnt a long time ago social media is NOT about likes and shares it is about converting and engaging them into clients.

I do more things and this stuff can take 2-4 weeks easily. The difference after the tweaks can be dramatic.

How about you - what will you be doing over the summer in your salon business?

Let me ask you this before you answer. It’s almost like a short questionnaire.

  1. Simply say yes or no to yourself.
  2. Are your results what you want them to be?
  3. Do you have a proven strategy in place?
  4. Do you stop, think and review or do you simply keep on hoping things will change?
  5. Do you have a test and refine system built into your business?
  6. Do you have a 12-month plan in place?
  7. Do you try and do everything yourself?
  8. Do you advertise like crazy when it’s slow in the summertime?
  9. Have you asked for expert advice over the last 12-months?
  10. Are you in fear for the future of your business?

If you answered yes to most you need to make some changes and make them fast.

Summertime is that time where you should make the effort to install changes if they are needed. You have the time so do it.

Recently I dealt with a client that had hired a team to post endless posts on social media. The crazy thing about was this.

He had agreed to pay £2,000 each month.

His results halfway through his 12-month contract were absolutely zero in terms of converting to clients.

He had tonnes of likes

Lots of shares

Most of his fans were paid for fans (fake likes).

I asked him why and he replied that he was getting a tonne of likes that he felt would turn into sales at some point yet ... He also realised his business wasn't a business because his sales were so low at this point. Sometimes talking to some clients makes no sense!

That just makes no sense when you are in business.

So it’s your choice and you do have a choice.

Summertime is a good time to sit and make changes to your salon strategy. Is it a good time to review and ask yourself many questions about the direction your business is really going in?

And please do this even if we never ever speak to each other – go hire an expert and get expert advice. You wouldn’t do your own heart operation so why play with your businesses life.
