I'm A Copywriter With Too Many Clients

A Copywriter With Too Many Clients?

A man stood at the side of the river. He couldn’t believe his eyes. There were so many fish it seemed impossible that he would go home with a bag full of fish.

He put his bike on the ground. He then unpacked his fishing gear. Once his hook was on his line he quickly added the bait and dropped his hook right in the middle of the fish.

Nothing happened. Five minutes later and still nothing happened. He lifted his hook to see his bait was still there. He dropped it back in again and just knew a fish would grab that bait and the big catch would begin.

Nothing happened.

30-minutes later the previously optimistic man decided to change his bait despite knowing the fish loved what was on his hook.

The bait was changed and once again the hook was dropped right in the middle of what appeared to be an endless shoal of fish.

One hour, two hours, three hours and more and not one single fish - not a nibble.

Eventually, the man pulled up his hook. Once out of the water the man that began so optimisticaly stared at the fish, scratched his head and just couldn’t believe he hadn’t a single fish to show for all of his efforts.

Here’s a copywriter who’s surrounded by clients but can’t get a client!

Below is a copy-and-paste conversation I had with a copywriter. I know he won’t mind me using this here.

'Dear Alan, I live in a very busy town and work hard as a copywriter. I don't know how to find clients. I have tried everything and nothing comes in.

'Dear copywriter, I looked at your town. It has a population of 117,000. It has a catchment area of 265,000. You also have around 3,800 businesses but even higher with the catchment area. Do none of them use words in their campaigns?'

'Dear Alan, Yes they all have words but I doubt any would want to pay a copywriter like myself’

Incredibly - THAT WAS A REAL CONVERSATION - with a copywriter emailing me and asking some questions.

This is the question that instantly arose in my mind.

Why do so many copywriters struggle to get a single client and charge such low fees?

I think it's a self-belief first and a simple how-to second. But it is crazy that's for sure.

Here is what I will tell all levels of copywriting.

There Are 3 Things All Business Need

  1. PAY; Businesses NEED copywriters and are happy to pay for the service as long as the value is highlighted

  2. PITCH; Go knock on a door and deliver your best pitch ever those businesses need to hear from you

  3. PERCENTAGE; A small percentage of businesses are chasing the big money and they will pay for a fast track to get to that money

If you’re a copywriter with too few clients you need to wake up to the opportunity on your own doorstep.
